Papervision3D to merge Away3D features
There’s been some questions about Away3D and Papervision3D and what’s going on etc. First, the 2 guys behind Away3D are doing an OUTSTANDING job with their modifications and feature set to Away3D, which is based on Papervision. Alexander Zadorozhny and Rob Bateman have really been cranking on the engine and we finally had to take a look at what they were doing!
I think one thing that will help clear confusion is to let everyone know that Away3D wasn’t intended to be another offering of Papervision3D, it was intended to be taken in a direction that met the needs of Alexander and Rob - and that’s exactly what got us excited! To see people actually taking PV3D and bending it to their will and project needs is a real testimony to the code base of PV3D, and that’s awesome to see happening. A friend of mine used to say: “If my bullet fits yer gun, shoot it!”
Also, since coming back from FITC and meeting many people face to face and getting their reactions to the engine, we’ve really been challenged to re-evaluate what we thought was important to implement in the engine and what to do next. Away3D’s features were a very clear confirmation of what we’d come to realize as what’s important to people right now, who are relying on PV3D for commercial use or considering it for future gigs. This decision to merge was the next logical step and obvious choice for PV3D’s future.
Carlos and Ralph both had a look at the code base and were extremely impressed with what’s been implemented for Rob and Alexander’s purposes. Alot of which is what Ralph is working on for version2 of Papervision3D. So we thought we needed to get together with them and talk about integrating the parts of Away3D to the core Papervision3D engine.
The plan now is to merge Away3D’s with features with Papervision’s code base after Papervision3D 1.1 and release it with Papervision3D 2.0. Ralph is primarily working on the feature set for PV3D2.0 and will be spearheading the merging of the code.
So, our hats go off to Alexander and Rob for a job well done! They’ve gone an built feature sets off of Papervision’s core and it’s been a very cool project to see take shape like this! I think every Open Source project would love to see such enthusiasm and inspiration and these guys definitely inspired us!

This is excellent news! I have a serious project atm and I’ve been testing it with both APIs. Gratitudes to the teams for all the effort.

Oh, seems like if you’re away of all this for 2 weeks you miss a lot of things. I’ve no idea about Away3D development. Looking cool!

These two applications and the creative minds behind them have really excited me. I had no idea Away3D had accomplished so much. Good work, guys!

Awesome - lights in PV3D!
Great to see how open the core team is to incorporating new code and ideas!

[...] This 2.0 version has been awaited for quite some time, deemed to include features from Away3D basically to create the ultimate Realtime 3D Flash engine. The plan for Papervision 3D 2.0 was to merge Away3D’s features with Papervision code, more can be found here - Papervision 3D and Away3D merge features. [...]

2.0’s goal was not to merge away3d at all. It was the build that would include shaders/materials/lighting and includes frustrum camera and ASCollada.
Just wanted to clarify this was not a merging of the 2 engines at all.

Hey John, I was curious what your idea’s are about this, now that 2.0a is out. Are you still planning on merging features? Cheers // EP

yeah we’ve said it a while ago, but the 2 engines have morphed to the point that a merge doesn’t make sense anymore. We’re still working with the away team on features that both teams would like to have included and that’s turned out to be a great way to go about it so far. It certainly allows both teams to do things the way they would like to have them done and that makes it fun for everyone in 3D
