Papervision3D training in London

by

We are very happy to announce that on December 11 & 12 we will be presenting 2 days of Papervision3D goodness, brought to you by RMI and FITC. In these 2 days of workshop, presented by me, Ralph Hauwert, we will be going over the Papervision3D API, enabling you to build your own rich and advanced Papervision3D instantiations. Also, we’ll be covering the new 2.0 features, like Shading, lights, ASCollada, etc.

Read more and subscribe yourself at the RMI website. (course outline to be updated).

While I’m ecstatic there’ll be a training seminar for Papervision nearer to me, the price looks a bit out of my league. Particularily since I’ll be commuting from Derby, and I’ll need to buy my own laptop to bring to this event…

Also seeing a lot of “if” on the areas I’m interested in- Collada animation and low polygon / optimisation. If circumstances change and I can find a spare £300 before christmas, then I’ll definately need to put my name down.

Question though. What skill level are you expecting for this, and what’s the general format of the presentation? A workshop or a lecture?

If you consider that a decent PV3D developer makes more than that in a single day of work, I don’t think it’s expensive at all.

  3. Kayn Says:

While I know Flash experts get paid a small fortune, I don’t believe £300 a day would work out well as my salary. I mean, I work thirty seven and a half hours a week coding interfaces for Flash sites, for about forty eight weeks a year (two weeks holiday, christmas, bank holidays, your numbers may vary I guess…). Even regarding the size of my company, I get a fairly respectable £20,000 a year considering my junior, less than a years professional experience level. And this involves a fair knowledge of other software to keep me valuable.

But your numbers say that I’d be earning about £72,000 pa for learning a single technology.

And while I love the idea of learning Papervision properly and under tutelege by you guys to bits, I doubt it’ll triple my income. With a monthly spare income of about £300, I’ll have to book time off work, scrimp on Christmas presents, extend my overdraft, and purchase the aforementioned laptop capable of running my copy of Flash CS3. Because I doubt I can drag my desktop down there. It’s a hefty thing. :)

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying I want the price lowered down to nothing. I just want to make sure my money’s going towards something appropriate to my needs. I’m especially keen to get to this thing, considering I missed Flash on the Beach.

Which is why I want to know the skill level (as in, can I get in with my intermediate-expert knowledge of AS2, my basic AS3 and my knowledge of 3dsMax, or will I need to be Colin Moock to understand this?) and whether the format will be Ralph running through a demonstration while we all tap away at keyboards, or whether it’ll be a more hands on approach.

Either way, hopefully I’ll get that time off, if only so I can make lots and lots of notes and be part of something amazing. I can barely wait.

    Hi Kayn,

I did the PV3D course in Toronto and spent my own money doing it, and I’ve found it easier to find work since. PV3D developers are in demand right now. I had a guy from London call me last week at 5am my time, offering to fly me over to work on an urgent PV3D project! And I’m now working on my 4th commercial contract using it. For freelance or high end flashers, it’s a good investment. But if you’re on a junior salary and don’t plan on going freelance, and your company won’t pay for it, then you may be better off learning it independently.

It sounds to me like you wouldn’t have too much trouble learning it. It’s a lot easier than it looks.

    Rich.

  6. slopester Says:

kayn, go freelance. there’s shit loads of work in London and if u know PV3D you are pretty much guaranteed work for the next year+

  7. Kayn Says:

We’ll see how much I like the conference before I decide on doing something like going freelance. I like my regular paycheque…

  8. Dennis Shinobi Says:

What are the best ways to find actionscript/flash work in london? Recruitment agencies? Can anyone recommend any good agencies or companies ? :)

  9. Kayn Says:

Can’t say I personally know Dennis. I fell into my current job through Monster, but I still get emails from the nice people at the agencies I’m on the mailing list for asking if they want me for a six month contract in Edinburgh. So the standard job sites and agencies will work if you’re looking for contract or full time work.

You could always ask the nice people at the London Flash Platform User Group if they have any leads. They meet up once a month or so, and I’m guessing you can network with the people there.

    Hi,

Are any more papervision classes slated for London in the future?

I’d be more than up for it. Failing that are there any other traning bodies that anyone knows which are offering classes in the London area?
