Out of all the sites I viewed, I fear all of them suffer from at least 1 major userbility issue.

    for example:
    - audi’s “menu” doesn’t always allow the person to rollover due to the front most menus blocking the ones behind.
Also, you can barely see the captions of the menu.

    - Here We Are ’s menu doesn’t even allow you to read it in the most comfortable manner – Left to right. If you wanted to decipher text, you had to tilt your head. Some of the buttons are again too small.

    - Papian’s site has some nice carousal / scrolling thing going. But come on… you’re trying to reach for the menu and suddenly the text starts scrolling like crazy, the pictures start scrolling like crazy… again, userbility.

Unfortunately, while Papervision 3D is great, its usage is currently “pretty” but “non-functional” IMHO. I wouldn’t recommend any of these sites as “ways to organise information”. I looked because I’m interested in implementing PaperVision 3d into my site, but am highly concerned with the userability aspect that seems to get ignored by most “3d “sites I’ve seen thus far.

    @Daryl Teo
That’s what I thought, browsing these pages. 3D is used, because it is 3D, hip and possible, but only for itself. Most pages would work much better with a 2D user-interface. History repeats (animated gifs, early Flash-Intros and now 3D). Often used, seldom with real benefit.

I’m a big fan of PV3D and the new possebilities, but we also need to reflect it as an usual user (“The normal web guy” ;)

While I agree with the comments on usability, keep in mind that usuability is not ALWAYS king. Some sites sacrifice some degree of usability to achieve a huge cool and WOW factor, which IS king in marketing. So for the marketing aspect of information, 3D has great potential. If usability is a legit concern for the project goals and user audience, then the issues you raised about usability are worth investigating. I guess my main point is usability does not trump everything. In some cases, it’s merely a minor inconvenice. It all depends on the audience and what you’re trying to accomplish with the site/app in the end.

If you don’t think these 3D UIs are usable, why don’t you build one that is?

  7. Daryl Teo Says:

@felix: that is why I am researching / looking at examples of 3d UIs. To find a good balance/formula. :)

Those are just my observations, which I note down whenever I find a certain niggle that pinches my nerve.

I agree with wow factor too, but if it goes into the realm of unusable, or simply too hard to use, users WILL leave. Hence, a good balance is required.

An example I think of right now would be the menu in Assassin’s Creed. It had this system where you view the “console” from your POV. But important menu items were obscured from view when looking in a certain direction. Not really intuitive.

Maybe one day, I might find a time to write out my observations :)

Are you sure Audi website is using Papervision 3D? It seems to be fake 3D…

  11. martincollett Says:

Audi looks like they’re using Papervision – the car is pre-rendered video, but I think the ‘cloud’ of image links that appears above the car are 3D

  12. karega Says:

On the Audi site is that a 3d model of a car?

  13. C4RL05 Says:

I would say the car is prerendered and the panels are in 3D.

    The Audi site is PV3D.

The drive-in sequence is a 3d render in flv format, but fades over to the PV world when it’s finished. The car looks a little non-3d, because it’s always facing the camera to prevent distortion. The floor, however, is a 2d layer under the PV scene. Thanks for the comments – I actually updated the menu this weekend to make it easier to click on everything. And thank you Papervision team for the link and the great library.

We launched a new Audi site today with more PV3D action:
    http://microsites.audi.com/ironman/index.html?language=en
check out the “Innovation Timeline” section – it might take a while to load but it’s pretty neat :)

I agree that most of the examples aren’t very good in usability. One very good example of great usability & 3D is this: http://www.whitevoid.com/application .

Audi America’s site isn’t really up to date.
There is still the old Audi A4.
And the RS 6 is nowhere to be found.

Whitevoid was pretty cool, though my friend didn’t really like it. Then again, he’s not a fan of flash websites in general lol

I’m sad… why isn’t my trackback being displayed :( They don’t like my article? lol

  19. Beovuk Says:

Very interesting topic has been started in these comments. Here are my 2 cents.

Usability and 3D are both of huge importance but in conjunction they’re still developing and presently there are rare examples of successfully utilizing both.

To address some of the posters:

“usability is not ALWAYS king” – It is in web development.

“History repeats (animated gifs, early Flash-Intros and now 3D)” – Putting 3D in that category is nothing short of delusional my friend.

Right now it’s on the developer to determine, according to client needs, the amount of balance that’s required between the two. But keep in mind, this is only the beginning.

We are about to see a big boom of 3D for web, right now we’re talking low poly (3, 4k triangles), but in a few years imagination will be the limit.

  22. Dude Man Says:

3D is great for games and transitions. 3D limits usability, I say again, 3D limits usability. 3D navigation is really lacking in papervision sites these days from a usability standpoint.

If you want an example of an awesome usable 3D site, please visit http://www.ecodazoo.com. Notice the specifics of the usability on the site. If we as developers overlook usability with all that papervision has to offer we will destroy flash’s images and people will just disable in their browsers.
