3D is great for games and transitions. 3D limits usability, I say again, 3D limits usability. 3D navigation is really lacking in papervision sites these days from a usability standpoint.

If you want an example of an awesome usable 3D site, please visit www.ecodazoo.com. Notice the specifics of the usability on the site. If we as developers overlook usability with all that papervision has to offer we will destroy flash's images and people will just disable in their browsers.

Very interesting topic has been started in these comments. Here are my 2 cents.

Usability and 3D are both of huge importance but in conjunction they're still developing and presently there are rare examples of successfully utilizing both.

To address some of the posters:

"usability is not ALWAYS king" - It is in web development.

"History repeats (animated gifs, early Flash-Intros and now 3D)" - Putting 3D in that category is nothing short of delusional my friend.

Right now it's on the developer to determine, according to client needs, the amount of balance that's required between the two. But keep in mind, this is only the beginning.

We are about to see a big boom of 3D for web, right now we’re talking low poly (3, 4k triangles), but in a few years imagination will be the limit.

Whitevoid was pretty cool, though my friend didn't really like it. Then again, he's not a fan of flash websites in general lol

I'm sad... why isn't my trackback being displayed :( They don't like my article? lol

Audi America's site isn't really up to date.
There is still the old Audi A4.
And the RS 6 is nowhere to be found.

The Audi site is PV3D.

The drive-in sequence is a 3d render in flv format, but fades over to the PV world when it's finished. The car looks a little non-3d, because it's always facing the camera to prevent distortion. The floor, however, is a 2d layer under the PV scene. Thanks for the comments - I actually updated the menu this weekend to make it easier to click on everything. And thank you Papervision team for the link and the great library.

We launched a new Audi site today with more PV3D action:
http://microsites.audi.com/ironman/index.html?language=en
check out the "Innovation Timeline" section - it might take a while to load but it's pretty neat :)
