Augmented Reality with FLARToolKit

By C4RL05

Augmented Reality is a relatively new technology that blends real-world footage and computer-generated graphics in real time, blurring the line between reality and virtual by enhancing what we perceive. It opens a whole lot of possibilities in many fields, from medical to engineering, including entertainment.

Thanks to Japanese coder Saqoosha we can experience it in our browser. With FLARToolKit, an AS3 port of the Open Source library ARToolKit, you can detect a marker from an input image and calculate the camera position in 3D space. Combine it with your favourite 3D engine and you are ready to build your own Augmented Reality applications.

Saqoosha makes amazing use of Papervision3D and FLARToolKit to wish us a Happy New Year. Just take a look at the video or, if you have a webcam, download and print the marker and experience it for yourself.

    so,

is there much write up about how to use FLARToolKit? I’ve been able to start going through papervision examples, but I guess we are all waiting for some detailed explaination of FLAR.

This worked perfectly for me at home yesterday evening and then when I tried to show my colleagues today I got a flash error (I’m running the debug version) and it just didn’t work. You can see it tracking, but it’s not showing any of the cool effects.
