Excellent interactive infographics from The New York Times that allows you to examine the 15th hole of the US Open Golf Tournament in glorious 3D.

Impressive high detail was achieved with a high-mesh laser scan of the 15th green that was used to build a detailed texture map and a simplified model for import into Papervision.

Created by Shan Carter, Mika Grondahl and Joe Ward at The New York Times.

VizualPV3D

vizualpv3d

VizualPV3D is a free Flash application that provides a GUI interface to create and manipulate objects in 3D scenes using Papervision3D.

A Juxt Interactive project, designed and developed by Gary Stasiuk, VizualPV3D provides a visual interface to Papervision3D that not only helps people see exactly what they are getting, but also enables designers and non-developers to create their own scenes.

The design and implementation of this application is nothing short of mind blowing, supporting most features of PV3D with a professional and well laid out interface. To get you started quickly it includes a comprehensive Help panel and an excellent PDF manual.

Freedom + Partners

f-pjpg

Our friends at Freedom + Partners from NYC are producing top class 3D pieces, with plenty of innovative ideas and great use of PV3D.

Their recently launched home site is a very interesting navigation experience, using all axis to display information with vector text and graphics. Very inspirational and well executed.

Pearl Jam Ten Game

Another great example of their work is Pearl Jam Ten Game a puzzle game for the promotion of the re-issue of the band’s first album.

Drag the cubes to solve the puzzle and unlock the album tracks. There are plenty of technical details to enjoy here, like the shading of the cubes, the smooth navigation or the 3D drag hand.

GE Smart Grid Augmented Reality

February 19, 2009

GE Smart Grid Augmented Reality makes great use of FLARToolKit and PV3D to create a digital hologram of Smart Grid technology in your hands.

A fantastic piece of work by our friends at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners and North Kingdom.

INDG

January 26, 2009

indg1

The new INDG site makes use of several innovative concepts and techniques, using a uncommon combination of 2D and 3D to create a smooth flow throughout the site that would not be possible without the use of realtime 3D.

It’s a really nice piece of work, full of details like the use of different shaders, the shadows and the subtle reflections.

Augmented Reality with FLARToolKit

January 7, 2009

Augmented Reality is a relatively new technology that blends real-world footage and computer-generated graphics in real time, blurring the line between reality and virtual by enhancing what we perceive. It opens a whole lot of possibilities in many fields, from medical to engineering, including entertainment.

Thanks to Japanese coder Saqoosha we can experience it in our browser. With FLARToolKit, an AS3 port of the Open Source library ARToolKit, you can detect a marker from an input image and calculate the camera position in 3D space. Combine it with your favourite 3D engine and you are ready to build your own Augmented Reality applications.

Saqoosha makes amazing use of Papervision3D and FLARToolKit to wish us a Happy New Year. Just take a look at the video or, if you have a webcam, download and print the marker and experience it for yourself.

PV3D loves LittleBigPlanet

December 16, 2008

Our good old PV3D is been making friends lately with LittleBigPlanet, this year’s must-have computer game.

The PS3 title is not only amazing for playing and building levels, but also a great source of inspiration for 3D developers and designers.

To celebrate its launch, our friends at Agency Republic have created a Sackboy generator to showcase the unprecedented customization available in the game.

Using PV3D and PureMVC framework, the microsite lets you create and control your very own 3D Sackboy, the games’ stuffed hero. Then, once you’re done, you can share it via a number of options, including your own embeddable Sackboy widget. They even plan to integrate the avatars into the LittleBigPlanet game itself!

And we have another cool LBP-PV3D example coming from the ranks of fan artists. Rémi Toffoli has made a pretty nifty Flash version of the original game combining several OS libraries: PV3D, APE and WiiFlash.

Prepare yourselves to enjoy a lot. Because time is ripe for Open Source projects and 3D.
