Rhythm of lines

July 14, 2007

Good Technology here in London, has just launched Rhythm of lines, a promotional site for the new Audi A5, using Papervision3D.

By using the mouse and keyboard, you create your own rhythms of lines and store them in your gallery. You can then play them back and use them as desktop wallpaper or screensaver.

If you are happy with your results, you can submit your work to the exhibition, where a selection will be printed in large format and sent to their autors.

Based on Lines, the Audi A5 spot from The Mill London directed by Blink’s Lynn Fox, the whole experience flows beautifully, creating a truly immersive atmosphere. Very polished and well executed, everything fits together nicely, from the art direction to the music.

But next generation Flash websites also require very talented people on the technical side. Stephen Spencer developed the core drawing engine that holds everything together, while Simon Oliver wrote a custom line renderer for Papervision3D and with Daniele Urania modeled the predefined shapes in Maya.

Simon also created a custom Python script that exported the vertices from Maya into an XML file. This data is then pulled into Stephen’s engine at compile time.

Stephen also wrote an SVG rendering script that converts all the 3D info into an SVG file, that gets converted into PDF format and there’s a little Easter egg which allows you to save that SVG data of your creations to your clipboard.

With focus on the Flash, type ilovesvg, choose the design you want in your gallery and select download wallpaper. When you hit save, the SVG data should be copied to your clipboard.

Papervision3D Public Beta

July 7, 2007

Papervision3D moves from private testing to a full public beta.

Everybody is welcome to download and start playing with it. We believe you will find it very easy to use and to integrate into your Flash 8, Flash CS3 and Flex projects.

It is released under the MIT Open Source license, which means it is absolutely free for any commercial use.

Source code
The project is now hosted in Google Code, where you will find all the downloads, the very latest source code via Subversion, issue tracking and project workspace. Existing users must use this new svn address.

API
Here is the documentation of the AS3 public classes and methods. It is also included in the source code download, along with examples to get you up and running right away. Now you can also download the Papervision3D Cheatsheet courtesy of ActionScript Cheatsheet.

Wiki
If you are not sure, this is the place to begin. Includes many examples, tutorials and tips, plus our Getting Started FAQ with detailed download and installation instructions.

Discussion
If you have any questions, you can subscribe to our OSFlash mailing list or access it via our Nabble forum.

Many thanks to EVERYBODY that have contributed with their time and effort during these 7 months of intensive development and testing.

This reel is a little review of what we have seen so far. Music by Shiny Toy Guns.

The Papervision3D team can’t wait to see what you’ll do with it next.

Have fun.

Mip mapping in Papervision3D

June 19, 2007

I’m very impressed with the mip mapping feature of the new Flash Player beta release.

In terms of image quality, the improvements are dramatic. On one side, using the same settings, textures are much detailed and flicker less when moving. Performance is also noticeably better.

But now, we can ramp up antialiasing without a massive performance penalty, rendering textures of amazing quality and very smooth object borders.

I’ve just updated my professional site, and the results speak for themselves. You will need Flash Player 9 Update 3 Beta 1 to see the benefits.

To take advantage of this feature without any restriction on texture size, Papervision3D now supports auto mip mapping on all materials.

Bitmaps and UV coordinates are adjusted to meet the technical requirements to enable mip mapping. In other words, any texture will benefit of this feature.

Hats off once again to the Flash Player team for their excellent work.

Need for speed

June 14, 2007

The public release of Flash Player 9 Update 3 Beta 1 is VERY EXCITING NEWS for Papervision3D.

The new features have a dramatic effect on performance, taking advantage of the latest developments in CPU design.

Hardware scaling allows us to go full screen, without increasing our render size and a very cool transition as a bonus. On the other hand, mip mapping improves the quality of our textures while drawing them faster.

But the feature I’m most excited about is multi core support, particularly in the vector rasterizer.

On a typical Papervision3D AS3 scene, the 3D calculations take around 30% of the time, while the remaining 70% is needed for the player to actually draw what we are rendering.

Since this process is our most significant performance bottleneck, splitting the work between the available CPUs makes a whole lot of difference.

Brahma Bus

June 8, 2007

Excellent site where you paint your own Brahma Bus in full 3D, share it with other people and even put it in your blog.

Site created by PARK Studio in Moscow and developed by the legendary Den Ivanov, using Papervision3D.

WiiFlash released

April 8, 2007

WiiFlash allows you to control your Flash games and applications with the revolutionary Wiimote.

It supports multiple Wiimotes, IR bar and Nunchuk and integrates very well with Papervision3D. All you need is a Bluetooth enabled PC and a Wiimote, of course.

If you want to play with it, go and get the code and subscribe to the WiiFlash mailing list.

Developed by Joa Ebert and Thibault Imbert.

Nice one guys and many many thanks! Flash has never been this fun.

From your eye, to our eye.

EYE-PROJECT is a video posting site for the Japanese telecom company KDDI where users can upload videos, photos or capture webcam input, and they become part of beautiful mosaics that you can also display in your blog.

Really impressive AS3 programming from Takayuki Fukatsu aka fladdict, using the latest Flash technology -including Papervision3D, which runs inside a commercial site for the first time :) (in the Archive page).

A brilliant concept, developed with superb attention to detail by Yugo Nakamura and his team.

First Papervision3D game

March 10, 2007

Course selection

With the wisdom that comes from being enlightened by the Force, our core team jedi has done it again.

Really well finished, with amazing graphics, music and sound fx, the first Papervision3D game is also very good fun.

Featuring next generation Flash technology such as Red5, what was thought to be impossible is now redefined.

Long life PaperWorld.

Another ‘new material’ demo.

PaperVision3D phong-shaded rhino

And this time it’s (fast/fake) phong shading. We are still working on the new revision, so we’d love to give you another sneak preview of what PV3D rc2 will be able to do.

A new dawn

February 16, 2007

I am very proud to present Ralph Hauwert as the new contributor to our project.

I have been following his amazing work since I heard him speak at the Spark conference in Amsterdam, back in 2005. When he volunteered his energy, enthusiasm and talent, I knew we were in for something special. But to be honest, I was not prepared for this.

He has undertaken the extremely challenging task of rewriting our render engine and take it to a level never seen before in Flash.

He is currently developing a dazzling array of state-of-the-art special effects that will take Papervision3D to a whole new dimension of graphics realism. And as if that wasn’t enough, his work will also boost the performance of the engine in many ways.

It is too early to understand the full implications of this development. But one thing is for sure, the web has taken a quantum leap into the future.

Please join me to thank Ralph for taking the time and effort to place his magic at our very fingertips.
