Papervision3D is Shifting Gears

October 13, 2009

First off, we would like to thank Ralph Hauwert for his tremendous contributions to Papervision3D and wish him well in his future endeavors. Ralph has been a good friend and a unique talent that has redefined everyone’s expectations of the Flash Player’s capabilities. Good luck Ralph!

Moving forward, we have regrouped and restarted our efforts in building a shiny new 3D engine for Flash Player 10. This new engine will simply be called “Papervision3D 3.0″.

Our focus this time around is being as Open Source and transparent as possible. In fact, even though we’re in the initial planning and architecture stages, you’re welcome to follow the progress and give feedback (if you feel technically qualified to do so) by watching the engine grow on github (*Updated the link to http://github.com/Papervision3D/Papervision3D *).

We would also like to welcome our newest team member, Ben Hopkins. His experience and expertise with 3D programming is a welcome boost to our project and a new set of eyes to keep us in check.

As the project grows, we will expect the team to grow as well. We fully encourage forks and contributions through github. With that being said, everyone must understand that we will filter the contributions based on quality and compatibility. We’re hopeful this approach will bring the community force of flash optimization tricks in helping to make the fastest 3D engine available.

Over the coming months, “3.0″ will be under heavy development and in constant flux. As we get more comfortable with our progress, we’ll announce potential release dates, but until then please set your expectations of the code base as “under construction”. With our focus shifting to “3.0″, we will be stopping development of “2.1″ for the foreseeable future. We will make an effort to work with the community to close out the open issues of “2.1″ and we’ll make those announcements through the mailing list and developers’ blog.

As always, we’re very grateful for your support and we appreciate your understanding of our project shift. We’re very excited to fire up our engines and take the project to a whole new level!

Cheers,
The Papervision3D Team

forum

An open-source project without a community to back it up is like an idling car with no one around to drive. We’re very grateful to everyone who uses Papervision3D and helps us to make the project better. In an effort to provide a quality developer community portal, we’d like to announce the (frequently requested) FORUMS!

We hope the forums will provide a place for developers to ask/answer questions and share what they’re working on. Forums come with the added benefit of being able to place inline images, swfs, and code. Now you won’t have to visit multiple links from an e-mail to understand and answer a simple question. Also, you’ll have the ability to permalink to a specific topic as well as have all the search engines hunt down relevant posts. All in all, we believe it’s a step in the right direction for sharing community knowledge.

Teach Flash, Win Flex!

In the spirit of building a forum community, we’re announcing our first forum sponsored competition with a prize of Flex Builder 3. I would go into all the details, but why don’t you just read about it here:

December 17, 2008

HelloEnjoy™

We’ve just uploaded a little teaser of my new studio website HelloEnjoy™, which I had the privilege to present a couple of weeks ago at Adobe MAX 2008 in Milan.

For those who missed it and want to get a sneak peek of the things to come, I’ll be presenting at ActionScriptHero.org‘s End Of Year Online Meeting tomorrow Thursday 18th December at 18:00 GMT. It’s a free event and you can participate from anywhere, just register today here.

Afterwards, we’ll be heading to LFPUG to join the London Flash community for some Xmas drinks. Hope you can make it!

[UPDATE] Due to technical reasons, the ActionScriptHero.org’s End of Year Online Meeting has been rescheduled for Monday January 19th 18:00 GMT.

We’re looking forward to see you there. Make sure you register fast, since there are only 24 seats available for this workshop! Also, make sure you hang around until the 6th, since there will be a free Flash event the day after, with speakers such as Lee Brimelow, GMUNK and Branden Hall.

Papervision QuadTree Support

October 14, 2008

That’s right!  Papervision3D now has integrated QuadTree support.  For those of you who aren’t sure what this means – it is a technique of subdividing the screen into smaller and smaller regions to resolve potential conflicts between triangles.  This is one solution to the common error found in the Painter’s algorithm that Papervision, (and all Flash3D engines) uses.

Papervision3D isn’t the first engine to incorporate QuadTrees into 3D Flash – and this is actually a port from Away3D.  Those guys did a phenomenal job at implementing QuadTrees into their engine – and after scouring the math and structure, very few changes were actually made to it – mostly just some big changes to get it working in Papervision, and a few extra features to help you out.  Be sure to give the Away team huge props for their work.

So to start using it, you will need to update your SVN, and check out the new QuadrantRenderEngine class.  For some demos and a walkthrough on how to use it, as well as some of the nuances of the QuadTree, check out my post, Using QuadTrees In Papervision3D.

In terms of what this means for the engine, it is a good step forward for Papervision3D.  Not only does it now give users 1 more option for handling z-fighting – it also setup the engine for some cool new features that will be coming out soon, including BSP and 2D clipping.  In addition, it got me going through the engine, and found some things that needed to be cleaned up.  All in all – it only means great things for the community.

Enjoy!

TRAINING w/ John Grden: Sept 14 – this weekend

September 8, 2008

Hey all, I’m doing another one of the online training classes this weekend! I’m doing optimization techniques again, but with revised videos. The last ones we’re a bit tough to read and to the folks that took the last one, we’ll be sending an invite to all of you to view the archive of this weekends session which will be MUCH easier to read and see.

I’m going to be showing you how you can take your Papervision3D applications from 3fps to the mid 20′s and beyond! It’s a really good class for beginners, immerdiate and advanced. I’ll be there for the entire class to answer questions and help out. The course includes all source for Winterwonder Land as well as many of the demo files and source I hand out at courses I teach on site.

SVN Changes, new Project Manager

August 25, 2008

We’re finally making the move to get 2.0 out the door as a final release!

Today, I tagged what was the current trunk as 1_7 and you can find that in the tags folder if you were using the trunk

The trunk has been updated to 2.0 beta 1 Great White and Ralph has posted a zip for download if you want it that way.

http://code.google.com/p/papervision3d/downloads/list

We’re working to get the documentation on the public api done, and at that point, we’ll release 2.0 as a final.

Also, we’ve changed my role (JohnG) to that of Project Manager.  We felt we needed to have one person at least keeping an eye on the big picture for releases and milestones and after voting on it, it was decided.  So, we’re going to be putting together milestones for dot releases of the engine and try to remain focused on these new milestones now that the engine is at a stable place under the hood.
