Online Papervision3D courses – Optimization techniques

June 20, 2008

I’m sorry I’m late on announcing this, I’ve been super busy with this current client and trying to get everything else done for the course has just consumed all motor skills and brain cells ;(

I’m taking a break from traveling for a while, so RMI has set me up with some on-line course time and this weekend (saturday), I’m going to pouring over the Winterwonder Land application and talking about optimization techniques for Papervision and the flash Player in general.

In the course files, I’m including nearly all the demo’s I used for the classes I taught in person as well as the source for Winterwonder Land’s animation engine etc.

If you’re interested, you can sign up over at RMI’s site:

Hope to see you there!

Visualizing news in 3D : MSNBC Spectra

May 13, 2008

MSNBC Spectra in action

“Spectra, a news visualization tool, gives consumers an alternate way to navigate msnbc.com in a three dimensional viewing state. Spectra offers comprehensive, up-to-the-minute news coverage, user customization, dynamic browsing and human body interaction. Spectra’s alluring design displays msnbc.com’s news headlines, fueled by RSS feeds, as colorful, graphic whirlwinds of movement and continually updated live headlines. Users can choose the news categories that interest them most, save stories to Spectra’s NewsCollector for later reading, filter their news by keywords and select various viewing states. “

Wow! Another beautifully styled Papervision3D application hits the web. This application is developed in the Netherlands by Remon Tijssen from Fluid and Marco Christis for SS+K.

Remon elaborates on the design : “The logo is designed based upon the 3D interface design and shape. The 3D cloud visualizes the news using the entire colour spectrum”.

All we can say to that is : Good looking indeed!

New! dev.papervision3d.org

April 24, 2008

We’ve just launched dev.papervision3d.org, a new blog dedicated to our developers.

You will find news and announcements, significant SVN updates, tutorial links and useful content for the Papervision3D community. Aiming to build a bridge between companies and designers and developers, we will also post PV3D job offers.

We start with some content you might find interesting, Tree3D, a component to create 3D navigation in minutes, a behind the scenes article about IAAW, and a top job offer: Director of Flash Platform at BLITZ.

This blog will continue to report on news and general information, and also to showcase the best PV3D work and promote the talent of our community. Remember you can submit your work using the link on the sidebar.

FINALLY! 50% Student discounts on John’s last 2 PV3D courses

April 17, 2008

Well, this is something that I’d wanted to do because I get asked about it quite a bit, but I don’t actually control the pricing of the courses. But the folks over at RMI got enough requests for it, and so they’ve issued a student discount code that’s worth 50% off the general admission price!

THAT ROCKS!

If you’re a student, and you’d like to attend one of the last 2 Papervision3D courses I’m doing (there are still other classes by other PV3D people going on after that of course), or you know a student, head on over to the links below and use this code:

Vancouver code: PVStudent

Toronto code: PVStudentTO

They only require that you show a valid student ID on the day of the classes of course.

You can also use ‘grdenvan‘ for 10% off discount on regular ticket prices.

Courses left:

Vancouver: May 3rd & 4th

Toronto: June 7th & 8th

After that, I’m done for a while. Check out this post to see what’s being covered, and here’s on post of a happy student from the Las Vegas class (which rocked beyond belief, that one was alot of fun!). Please let me know if you have any questions!

Papervision3D Toronto 2008

Yes! Flash In The Can – Toronto 2008 is coming up real soon!

Last year we had a great time at this awesome event and we are hoping it will be even better this year!

This year’s event will include a pre-conference 1-day official workshop on Papervision3D hosted by one of the core development team, yours truly, Ralph Hauwert.

With the FITC Amsterdam workshop completely selling out, make sure you are in time ordering your tickets for FITC Toronto fast…real fast. To attend you need either a pre-festival workshop ticket or a full conference ticket, which will give you access to the entire event.

The code unitzeroone will give you a 10% discount on the full conference ticket!

If you decide to go to the conference make sure you also attend the “3D in Flash: Now and in the future” session, which promises to become an interesting discussion between developers and Adobe!

Also, some love at Flash 2D and 3D effects would be highly appreciated (as well as giving you a sneak at some previously unseen material )!

Papervision3D at the Crunchies! (video)

January 22, 2008

This weekend the Crunchies where awarded to various achievements in the web industry. The guest list for this event must have looked like the absolute star list of the web 2.0, developers, entrepeneurs and even MC Hammer was there ;-) Most of them rooting for a crunchie. Amongst them, 1 Papervision3D powered project, Earthmine was nominated in the category Best Technology Innovation.

A big part of the Earthmine web application has been co-developed using Papervision3D by one of the core team members, UnitZeroOne. Imagine the excitement when Earthmine won and in their acceptance speech where kind enough to thank the entire Papervision3D community for their effort! Congratulations and thank you, Earthmine team.

Additions and changes to the team.

January 9, 2008

The Papervision3D team has just been expanded with new members and a change to the Core Team.

First of all, there has been a 2 tiered team setup for a while now; the Core Team and the Committer Team. The Core team controls things like engine quality, releases, team setup, api, etc. The 2nd tier, which we’ll hopefully expand more, is for new team members working on specific functionality or non-core tasks.

In any case, we’d like to welcome Andy Zupko to the Core Team as well as welcoming Seb-Lee Delisle and Stephen ‘Tink’ Downs to the Committer Team. And since we have never officially announced the Committer Team either, we still need to welcome Ricardo “Mr.Doob” Cabello and DeAngelo Richardson to the Committer Team too! We are really happy with all this talent joining Papervision3D and are looking forward to a great year !

The current team members and their respective roles.

Core Team :
Carlos Ulloa – Founder / Leader
John Grden – Component / Release Manager
Ralph Hauwert – Engine Core / Sorting / Shaders
Tim Knip – Engine Core / DAE / Shaders / Animation
Andy Zupko – Effects

Committer Team:
Ricardo Cabello – Testing / Demos / Feature review
De’Angelo Richardson – Testing / Extra Features
Stephen Downs – Flex 2.0 component / effects
Seb Lee Delisle – Particles

Happy 2008!
